Secret Cave Office Chart [SEPTEMBER 2017]

It feels incredible to be writing here again. For those who don’t know, or didn’t notice, our domain went offline for almost an entire week. This, obviously, left Benjamin and I distraught and distressed for the down-time’s duration. It effected every area of our output, with it even coming close to causing a permanent cessation. Despite such devastating circumstances, we’ve been able to move past it confidently in readiness for our next phase. As a result of the issues with the domain, a backlog of tasks requiring completion has built up. An Office Chart is well overdue, though I did state in the previous one that it might be the last.…   [continue reading]

Secret Cave Office Chart [AUGUST 2017]

As Benjamin and I scurry away at work for our upcoming print zine, this Office Chart nearly never happened. It’s more difficult to compile something as coherent as it is eclectic, on a regular basis, than I thought. So, I was somewhat lucky with this one. Many of the tracks fell into place with barely a nudge, making an end product that might be one of the more intriguing charts yet. Unfortunately, it may also be the final Office Chart that I make in this way. With Secret Cave moving in a different direction, I’m not sure what place they’ll have in the future.…   [continue reading]

Secret Cave Office Chart [JULY 2017]

I’m not sure how it ended up this way, but this month’s is the most disparate offering I’ve curated yet. Still, there’s only one point in it that I think is uncomfortable and jarring. Be aware of the transition between Boards of Canada‘s Satellite Anthem Icarus and Modest Mouse‘s Ocean Breathes Salty; it’s a particularly nasty one. Unfortunately, it was a bit too late to do anything about and Ocean Breathes Salty is good enough to get past it. Beyond that, this month’s playlist skips from genre to genre without a moment’s rest. On the whole, it works quite well with a playful verve.…   [continue reading]

Secret Cave Office Chart [JUNE 2017]

Having been rather busy this month, on a variety of projects, June’s Office Chart is much more off-the-cuff. It found itself put together in short spots of downtime. Its choices were more impulsive; thrown on in the moment, as the whim took me. That said, I may have accidentally come out with the best end-product yet. Perhaps, in the past, my agonising over equal genre-mixes and ordering was a mistake. While I have spent some time making sure that there’s some coherence in the flow, a lot of the work did itself. The songs just seemed to make sense next to each other.…   [continue reading]

Secret Cave Office Chart [MAY 2017]

I don’t know about the Secret Cave readership, but i’m really getting a lot out of making these playlists. Last month‘s had an odd tinge to it, mainly thanks to some personal mishaps in my life at the time. After wishing myself luck for this month, it does indeed appear that things have taken a turn for the better. Oddly, May’s Office Chart has resulted in a slightly darker tone overall. Still, I feel I’ve hit on a nice coherence for this one. I’ve also managed to feature Juiceboxxx‘s latest single, as a follow-up to his interview with us last week.…   [continue reading]

Secret Cave Office Chart [APRIL 2017]

April is the month of my birthday. Therefore, I felt it only appropriate that I reflect that general merriment with a more upbeat playlist. I also, in its construction, had several things going on in my life that rather coloured the choices I made. As a result, it’s perhaps not as exploratory as i’d like it to be. That said, I do feel it improves over my more disparate offering from last month. There’s still a clear divide in the groupings of similar material at times, but i’m going to blame that on the personal nature of my decisions. For those who can see the implications of my words, it didn’t work out.…   [continue reading]

Secret Cave Office Chart [MARCH 2017]

This month’s playlist is much more varied than the February edition.  I tried a lot harder to make it a bit more representative of my overarching tastes.  That said, quite a lot of this material was new to me.  I’m finding that making these is helping me to discover a few things myself.  That, at the very least, makes it worth doing.  Overall, i’m really quite happy with this one.  However, I do have a couple of problems i’d like to iron out for April’s Office Chart.  For example, I feel the two halves are slightly too separate.  After a more upbeat opening, it’s quite a bit more chilled out by its conclusion.  …   [continue reading]

Secret Cave Office Chart [FEBRUARY 2017]

Yep, I’ll admit with my hands in the air that this is hardly an original idea.  Radiohead have been doing office charts for years, and I can only assume that thousands of hip blogs and magazines have adopted it.  Of course, it doesn’t really matter.  I just thought it would be a fun monthly thing to do.  Besides, I’ve got a High Fidelity-esque predilection for making playlists anyway.  Neither of the Bens have anything to do with this, in case they get ashamed by the choices.  This is just my own personal “writing an article for Secret Cave” playlist.  …   [continue reading]

This is something we’ve been planning and working on in the background since we announced our physical zine. SC Streamcast #01, Two SCP Minis and General Updates

It seems that I lied in my previous post, intended as a sort of temporary finale. The idea was for that to be the last piece on Secret Cave until Issue #1: Birth sees release. I had a feeling that wouldn’t be the case. Too many things have happened that require a small update on the site itself. So, while Benjamin and I keep working on the zine, I thought I’d put this out as timely housekeeping. Incidentally, before I move into other territory, work on the zine has been a mixed bag. We’ve been coming out with some very strong results lately, and I can’t wait to make them public.…   [continue reading]
